Castellammare del Golfo commemorates Paolo Ficalora assassination anniversary

The community of Castellammare del Golfo held a memorial to mark the 34th anniversary of the assassination of Paolo Ficalora. Ficalora, a retired merchant captain, was murdered by the mafia on September 28, 1992.

Ficalora was shot in front of his wife near a tourist resort he managed in Guidaloca. The killing was motivated by his resistance to mafia intimidation regarding his property and his decision to host a mafia informant, Totuccio Contorno, at his residence. Giovanni Brusca and Gioacchino Calabrò were convicted for the murder.

The memorial ceremony included Mayor Giuseppe Fausto and Ficalora’s children, Angelo and Tiziana. Mayor Fausto noted that Ficalora’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of legality and the responsibility to combat intimidation and illegality.
