Castellammare del Golfo hosts fifth Veleggiata delle Tonnare sailing regatta and book launch

On Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 August, the coastal town of Castellammare del Golfo in Sicily held the fifth edition of the Veleggiata delle Tonnare. Organized by the Italian Naval League’s Castellammare del Golfo section and supported by the municipality, the Italian Sailing Federation and the local fishing cooperative, the event combined a sailing race with cultural activities.

The programme opened with the presentation of Ninni Ravazza’s book “La Tonnara di Scopello. I Faraglioni di Ulisse”, a work that traces the history of the historic Scopello tuna fishery. The book was handed out free to participants and league members. In the opening ceremony, league president Giuseppe Stabile, mayor Giuseppe Fausto and author Ninni Ravazza addressed the audience, with Stabile stating, “La Veleggiata delle Tonnare unisce la passione per la vela e la valorizzazione della nostra storia e della nostra identità marinara.” Over thirty vessels raced through the Gulf, symbolically retracing the route of ancient tuna‑fishing stations and celebrating the town’s maritime heritage.
