Castellammare di Stabia hit by landslides and mudflows
Landslides and heavy rainfall have caused significant disruption in Castellammare di Stabia, affecting various areas including the historic center, port zones, and the Madonna della Libera locality. The landslides resulted in mud and debris flows that blocked major roads and tunnels, such as the Pozzano tunnel, though emergency crews have worked to reopen primary traffic arteries.
Cleanup operations in Via Bonito and Via Caio Duilio required specialized intervention after initial efforts by Velia Ambiente revealed the need for complex structural safety measures. While major roads have seen some reopening, approximately fifty families remained at risk of evacuation due to the instability in the hilly areas.
Local political groups, Democratici e Progressisti, have criticized the regional government, alleging that 10 million euros in CIPE funding allocated in 2012 has remained stalled for 14 years. They argue that the lack of completed hydrogeological stabilization projects has left the city vulnerable to recurring emergencies and constant danger to residents and local businesses.
