Castellammare di Stabia: Illegal beach barrier removed

The metal barrier in Pozzano, located along the coast of Castellammare di Stabia, has been removed. The structure, referred to by critics as the ‘gate of shame,’ had separated the public Calcina beach from a section under concession to the Towers Hotel Stabia.

The barrier had been a subject of significant local protest during the summer season. Critics, including Member of Parliament Francesco Emilio Borrelli of Alleanza Verdi-Sinistra, argued that the waist-high fence obstructed public access to the shoreline and prevented the passage of emergency services and law enforcement.

Following inspections and reports by the Coast Guard, the structure was identified as an illegal installation on maritime state property. While hotel management had previously cited noise concerns and illegal fishing as reasons for the fence, the Coast Guard had moved to seize the structure. Local representatives have stated they will continue to monitor the coastline to ensure all unauthorized barriers are removed.
