Castellón expands green gas infrastructure with four new plants

The province of Castellón is expanding its renewable energy infrastructure with the addition of four new green gas plants, including three biomethane facilities and one biogas plant. These projects, which involve investments totaling tens of millions of euros, aim to transform livestock, agricultural, and agro-industrial waste into energy.

In Canet lo Roig, Vilagás Canet S.L. plans to invest 8 million euros in a facility capable of supplying energy equivalent to the consumption of up to 4,000 households. Additionally, a company belonging to the Ence group has begun procedures for a project exceeding 24 million euros to produce biomethane and organic fertilizers from organic waste.

These initiatives complement existing green hydrogen projects in the region. An Iberdrola and bp facility in El Serrallo, operated under Castellón Green Hydrogen S.L., completed construction in June and is expected to begin operations this year. The plant has an annual capacity of 2,800 tons and is projected to prevent 23,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
