Castello di Lombardia rockfall in Enna prompts safety measures after heavy rain

A large rock from the perimeter wall of the Castello di Lombardia in Enna collapsed overnight following a severe rainstorm classified as a nubifragio. The municipal administration, led by Mayor Mirello Crisafulli, ordered a partial closure of the perimeter road while keeping access to the castle entrance, the Euno square and the Rocca di Cerere open. A technical meeting with the Soprintendenza, the State Property Agency and the Prefecture is scheduled for 25 August to plan structural consolidation and preservation actions.

The weather event on 6 August produced 32 mm of rain in Enna, with intense thunderstorms across the central and eastern parts of Sicily. Forecasts for 7 August still anticipate possible afternoon showers, though less widespread than the previous day. Local officials emphasized the castle’s historic and cultural significance, describing it as the largest fortified complex in Italy and a source of regional pride.
