Castelsardo implements new regulations and sanctions against stray animals

The Castelsardo municipal council has approved a new regulation aimed at combating stray animals, protecting pet welfare, and ensuring public safety and urban decorum. The regulation, established via resolution number 38 on July 21, 2026, will officially take effect on September 3.

Mayor Maria Lucia Tirotto stated that the measures are necessary to increase awareness regarding respect for animals and the local territory, as well as to ensure collective security. Local Police Assessor Grazia Lorenzoni noted that the rules address frequent reports of stray dogs, often involving pets without microchips or cases of negligent ownership.

The new rules introduce several fines for violations: up to 1,000 euros for lack of a microchip, up to 900 euros for failure to register with the canine registry, and up to 600 euros for roaming dogs (doubling to 1,200 euros if the animal lacks a microchip). Additional penalties include up to 500 euros for failing to clean up pet waste and up to 300 euros for walking a dog without a leash.
