Castelvenere hit by waterspout and hail, damaging homes and vineyards

A violent waterspout and heavy hailstorm struck the municipality of Castelvenere on August 25, causing extensive damage to both residential structures and the local agricultural sector. In the historic center, wind gusts were strong enough to partially or completely tear off roofs, scattering debris into narrow streets. While no injuries were reported, the storm caused significant disruption to transportation, blocking State Road 87 and several local roads with mud, debris, and fallen trees.

The local economy, which is heavily dependent on viticulture, has been severely impacted. The hailstorm hit vineyards during the critical grape maturation phase, just days before the scheduled harvest. Local officials, including Budget Councilor Giovanni Arturo Verrillo, noted that the agricultural sector is in a critical state due to the destruction of many vine rows.

Regional Councilor Pellegrino Mastella has called for urgent action from the regional Agriculture Department to begin official damage assessments. This is intended to facilitate access to regional and state relief funds for affected farmers whose livelihoods and seasonal investments are at risk.
