Castelvetro di Modena hosts traditional Renaissance Living Checkers event

The town of Castelvetro di Modena will host its traditional ‘Living Checkers’ event on September 12 and 13. For over 50 years, the event has featured participants dressed in Renaissance-style attire acting as checkers and pieces on a checkered piazza.

The reenactment commemorates a festival organized by the Rangoni nobles in honor of the poet Torquato Tasso, who reportedly found refuge in Castelvetro in 1564. The event includes aerial dances, light shows, and fire performances, narrated by Simone Maretti.

Mayor Federico Poppi noted that the event is a vital part of the town's identity. This year's procession will take place on a newly renovated piazza, adding new value to the historical tradition.
