Castilla-La Mancha agricultural sectors face price and climate challenges
Agricultural sectors in Castilla-La Mancha are facing contrasting challenges. The melon and watermelon campaign is described as “deceiving” by José Ángel Serrano, president of the Interprofesional de Melón y Sandía de Castilla-La Mancha. Producers are struggling with low origin prices, averaging between 14 and 18 cents per kilo, while retail prices reach up to 60 cents. This gap, combined with extreme summer heat reaching 43 degrees Celsius, threatens to leave losses of nearly 3,500 euros per hectare.
In the wine sector, Castilla-La Mancha holds 47.5% of Spain's total vineyard area. While national wine consumption in Spain fell by 7.2% between July 2025 and June 2026, shifting consumer preferences may offer regional opportunities. There is an increasing demand for white, young, and lower-alcohol wines, a trend that favors the production styles prevalent in the region, even as traditional reserve-style production faces challenges.
