Castilla-La Mancha activists protest for public abortion access
The Platform for the Right to Abortion in the Public Sector of Castilla-La Mancha has called for a demonstration in Alcázar de San Juan on September 27. The protest aims to demand that the regional government guarantee access to voluntary interruption of pregnancy through the public healthcare system under equal conditions for all women.
Organizers, including feminist, union, and human rights groups, criticize the current model where women are often referred to private clinics. They claim that in 2024, 100% of legal abortions in Castilla-La Mancha were performed in private facilities. Furthermore, they report that over the last 15 years, approximately 60% of women in the region have had to travel outside of Castilla-La Mancha to exercise this right.
The platform highlights that this reliance on private resources creates territorial inequality, disproportionately affecting women in rural areas or those with limited economic means who may struggle with travel costs, work permissions, or personal circumstances.
