Castilla-La Mancha invests 3.2 million euros in RSV protection for infants

The regional government of Castilla-La Mancha has formalized a contract with Sanofi Aventis to purchase 15,000 doses of nirsevimab to protect infants against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) for the 2026-2027 campaign. The total cost of the contract is approximately 3.26 million euros including taxes.

The purchase includes 10,000 doses of 50 milligrams and 5,000 doses of 100 milligrams, provided in pre-filled syringes. Nirsevimab, marketed as Beyfortus, is a monoclonal antibody rather than a conventional vaccine, providing direct antibodies to newborns and infants to prevent severe infections such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia.

Health authorities note that the use of this treatment in Spain has shown an effectiveness rate of nearly 80% in preventing severe disease and hospitalization in children under one year old. Estimates suggest the treatment could prevent between 7,510 and 10,213 hospitalizations among this age group.
