Castilla-La Mancha launches prehospital blood transfusions in mobile ICUs

The Government of Castilla-La Mancha has launched a pioneering program to provide prehospital blood transfusions via mobile intensive care units (UVI móviles). This initiative makes the region the first autonomous community in Spain to incorporate this capability into its terrestrial public emergency system.

Starting in Guadalajara, the program allows medical teams to administer blood transfusions to critically ill patients with severe hemorrhages at the scene of an emergency or during transport to a hospital. The medical protocol utilizes O-negative blood, which is universally compatible, along with fibrinogen to aid coagulation.

Scientific evidence indicates that mortality rates increase by approximately 5% for every minute of delay in activating massive transfusion protocols. This advancement is intended to stabilize patients facing life-threatening situations such as traffic accidents, polytrauma, gastrointestinal hemorrhages, and aortic aneurysm ruptures. The technology and logistics used in these mobile units mirror those previously deployed in the region's medical helicopters.
