Castilla-La Mancha leads Spain in certified seed production

Castilla-La Mancha has established itself as a national leader in the production of certified seeds, accounting for 20.6% of Spain's total production. For the 2024/2025 campaign, the region has dedicated nearly 44,000 hectares to certified seed production, primarily focusing on cereals such as barley and wheat.

Lydia Benítez, the Director General of Agricultural Management, recently visited the facilities of VYSMAN (Viveros y Semilleros de La Mancha) in Cinco Casas, Ciudad Real. Benítez described the seed sector as “strategic” for regional agriculture, noting that seeds are the starting point for production and a decisive factor in crop quality and competitiveness.

In the region, the use of certified seeds has increased significantly over the last decade, rising from 18% to 47%. Companies like VYSMAN contribute to this growth through innovation and experimentation, utilizing extensive trial fields for various cereals, legumes, and horticultural varieties to develop genetically advanced crops adapted to the environment.
