Castilla-La Mancha residents join Spain’s largest medical research study

Approximately 3,000 residents from Castilla-La Mancha are participating in the IMPaCT Cohort, described as the largest research study conducted in Spain. The project, known as the Precision Medicine Infrastructure associated with Science and Technology, aims to understand the factors determining population health and the development of major diseases.

The study is organized through two regional nodes located in Albacete and Alcázar de San Juan. This placement allows for the inclusion of both rural and urban populations, which officials state is essential for ensuring the research is representative of Spain’s demographic diversity and for studying the impact of lifestyle and health inequalities.

Funded by the Carlos III Health Institute and co-financed by the European Union’s NextGenerationEU program, the Predictive Medicine program seeks to build a prospective population-based cohort of 200,000 participants, with a target of 8,000 from Castilla-La Mancha. Nationally, the IMPaCT Cohort has deployed 51 nodes across all Spanish autonomous communities and has already incorporated nearly 45,000 people.
