Castilla y León expands rural tourism through nature and wine

The Castilla y León region in Spain is expanding its rural tourism offerings through diverse natural and viticultural experiences. In Sena de Luna, located in the Western Mountains of León, tourism focuses on the intersection of livestock traditions and natural landscapes. The area, protected by the Valles de Omaña y Luna Biosphere Reserve and the Babia y Luna Natural Park, offers hiking routes such as the Brañas de Caldas and the Cordel de Merinas, which follow ancient transhumance paths. Additionally, the MTB Moon initiative provides mountain biking trails through the valleys of Sena de Luna, Abelgas de Luna, Aralla de Luna, and Caldas de Luna.

Parallel to these natural activities, the region has established a robust network of nine certified wine routes: Arlanza, Arribes, Bierzo, Cigales, Ribera del Duero, Rueda, Sierra de Francia, Toro, and Zamora. Certified by ACEVIN, these routes integrate wineries, museums, and historical sites like monasteries and castles. This enotourism model attracts over 600,000 visitors annually, serving as a vital economic driver for rural communities by combining wine production with gastronomy and heritage tourism.
