Castilla y León joins international wildlife conservation council

The regional government of Castilla y León has joined the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC), alongside Aragón and Extremadura. By joining this international consultative body—the only hunting association accepted as an observer at the UN—the region aims to promote its hunting management model as a tool for wildlife conservation, land management, and rural development.

Hunting activities cover more than 88% of Castilla y León's territory through approximately 5,500 hunting grounds and ten Regional Hunting Reserves. Officials highlighted the activity's economic impact on rural employment, hospitality, and service sectors. Joaquín Antonio Pino, Counselor for Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Affairs, and Environmental Policy, described the model as an "example of compatibility between conservation, active land management, economic activity and rural development."

In addition to the international move, the region is implementing new management measures. A mid-season hunting campaign will run from August 15 to September 20, introducing a mandatory catch registration system via paper forms or the Capturcyl app. This initiative is intended to provide objective data for future management decisions and further strengthen the regional hunting reserves.
