Castilla y León potato production costs average 18 cents per kilo
A study by the University of Valladolid indicates that the average production cost for one kilogram of potatoes in Castilla y León is 18 cents, or approximately 179.30 euros per ton. The research, based on the 2025 campaign, shows that irrigated potato production costs exceeded 8,000 euros per hectare, specifically averaging 8,023 euros per hectare for an expected yield of 44.7 tons.
Castilla y León remains Spain’s primary producer, accounting for nearly 50% of national production with approximately 900,000 tons. During the 2025 campaign, the sown area reached nearly 19,500 hectares, a 12% increase from 2024, concentrated mainly in Valladolid and Salamanca.
Production costs vary by province. Segovia and Ávila recorded the highest weighted averages at 8,832 euros/ha and 8,735 euros/ha, respectively, while Palencia reported the lowest at 6,899 euros/ha. These variations are primarily attributed to differences in expected yields, which influence seeding rates and requirements.
