Castilla y León R&D investment reaches 1,022 million euros in 2024

Research, Development, and Innovation (R&D+i) investment in Castilla y León reached 1,022 million euros in 2024, representing 1.37 percent of the region's GDP. This figure marks a slight increase of 58.7 million euros compared to the previous year. The business sector remains the primary driver of this activity, accounting for 60 percent of the total investment.

According to the 2024 report from the Research and Innovation Strategy for Smart Specialization (RIS3), a total of 2,148.5 million euros was mobilized, a 7.4 percent increase over the previous period. Of this total, 734.4 million euros originated from public funds, including 489.3 million from the Junta de Castilla y León and 245.1 million from national and European programs.

While the region maintains an investment rate above 1 percent of its GDP, it remains below the Spanish national average of 1.5 percent and the European Union average of 2.2 percent. In the regional ranking, Castilla y León follows areas with higher investment intensity such as the Basque Country, Navarra, Madrid, and Catalonia.
