Castilla y León reports 5.5% drop in blood donations

The Hemotherapy and Hemodonation Center of Castilla y León (Chemcyl) reported a total of 52,706 blood and plasma donations during the first half of 2026. This figure represents a 5.5% decrease compared to the same period in 2025.

Breakdowns by donation type show 46,673 total blood donations (down 4.4%), 4,904 plasma donations (down 13.8%), and 1,129 platelet apheresis donations (down 7.9%). In the province of León, donations totaled 7,505, accounting for over 14% of the regional total. However, the León health area saw a significant 12.4% decline in donations, while the El Bierzo area experienced a smaller decrease of 2.4%.

Regional leaders in donation volume include Valladolid with 14,623 donations and Burgos with 10,779. To address the seasonal decline and maintain hospital reserves, Chemcyl has launched the ‘Salvar vidas está en tus manos’ (Saving lives is in your hands) campaign to encourage public solidarity during the summer months.
