Castilla y León residents protest industrial biogas and biomass projects

Residents and activist groups in the Castilla y León region of Spain are organizing protests against various industrial projects, specifically targeting biogas plants and biomass exploitation.

In La Vecilla, over one hundred people gathered to discuss the cumulative environmental impacts of energy, waste management, and resource extraction projects in the Leonese mountains. Concerns were raised regarding the intensive extraction of wood for biomass, which critics argue could threaten biodiversity and carbon sequestration. The biomass logistics center in Almazán was specifically cited as a point of concern.

In Jambrina, the Association Biogás ‘Así No Jambrina’ has taken legal action to halt two proposed contiguous biogas plants capable of processing over 200,000 tons of waste annually. Residents fear these facilities will degrade air and water quality, increase heavy transport, and negatively impact the local economic model in a region already struggling with depopulation.
