Castilla y León wildfires hit IGR‑2 level, over 400 evacuated

During the fourth heat wave of the summer, three forest fires in Castilla y León were upgraded to level two of the Potential Severity Index (IGR‑2). One fire broke out in Veguellina, Villafranca del Bierzo at 17:30 and was raised to IGR‑2 by 19:30 as the blaze threatened nearby settlements. Another originated in San Cipriano del Condado at 14:38, reaching IGR‑2 within an hour, prompting the evacuation of residents from Santa María del Condado to a sports centre in Villanueva del Condado. A third fire in Fermoselle (Zamora) was also classified as IGR‑2. In total, more than 400 people from eight localities, a camping site and a seniors’ residence were evacuated. About a dozen firefighting units—including aerial aircraft, helitransported crews, bulldozers and environmental agents—were deployed to contain the flames.

The regional government, the Junta de Castilla y León, continues to monitor the situation as the heat wave sustains extreme temperatures and dry conditions that heighten wildfire risk.
