Castilla‑La Mancha dominates Spain’s organic vineyards and hosts climate‑adaptation viticulture summit

In 2024 Castilla‑La Mancha cultivated 68,541 hectares of organic vineyards, representing more than 41 % of Spain’s certified organic wine area and making it the clear national leader. The region’s organic surface is double that of Catalonia and triple that of the Valencian Community. Nationwide, organic vineyards cover 164,861 hectares, 18 % of the total vineyard area, while 1,475 wineries work with organically grown grapes. Consumer demand for sustainable products has driven this growth, with 67 % of Spanish households buying organic food in 2025.

From 12‑14 May 2026 the regional Institute of Vine and Wine in Castilla‑La Mancha hosted the 38th meeting of the Working Group on Viticulture and Enology. The three‑day event gathered 58 researchers and technicians from 16 Spanish research centres, delivering around 50 presentations on topics such as climate‑change adaptation, soil management, vegetative cover, irrigation, pest monitoring, biopreparations, nanotechnology, and low‑sulphur winemaking. The conference underscored Castilla‑La Mancha’s role as a national hub for viticultural research, aiming to boost sustainability and competitiveness of its wines in domestic and international markets.
