Castlemap launches interactive map of 7,700 historical sites

A new interactive map called Castlemap provides a digital database of over 7,700 historical sites across 141 countries. Utilizing open data from Wikidata, the platform categorizes locations into four main groups: castles and palaces, fortresses and fortifications, palaces and residences, and ruins.

Each entry on the map includes geographic coordinates, photographs, and brief historical descriptions sourced from Wikipedia. The platform also features a game called CastleGuessr, which challenges users to identify the location of a randomly displayed castle photo to test their knowledge.

While the database is not exhaustive, it includes prominent landmarks such as the Palace of Versailles in France, the Acropolis in Greece, the Alhambra in Spain, and Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany. Spain currently leads the database with nearly 600 entries.
