Castrovillari court sets hearing for Edison Malaj workplace death case

The preliminary hearing for the death of Edison Malaj is scheduled for October 7, 2026, at the Court of Castrovillari. Malaj, a 55-year-old worker, died on February 16, 2024, in Frascineto after being struck by a concrete slab that fell when a cable detached from a crane during loading operations.

Thirty months after the incident, the Fillea Cgil Calabria union has announced it will join the victim's family as a civil party in the proceedings. Simone Celebre, General Secretary of Fillea Cgil Calabria, criticized the significant judicial delays and the high costs of legal defense for families of workplace accident victims.

The union is currently advocating for a national legislative change to provide legal aid without income limits for the families of those killed in workplace accidents, a proposal supported by various political forces.
