Castrovillari judge orders indictment in fatal construction site death

A judge in Castrovillari has ordered the indictment of a business owner following the death of worker Edison Malaj. Malaj died on February 16, 2024, at a construction site in Frascineto after being struck and crushed by heavy concrete slabs.

The court has also admitted the Fillea Cgil Cosenza-Pollino trade union as a civil party in the proceedings. Legal representatives for the union stated that the fatal accident harmed the organization's statutory mission to protect worker health and safety.

The first hearing for the trial is scheduled for December 9, 2026, at the Court of Castrovillari. The decision comes after more than thirty months since the incident, following a sit-in organized by the victim's family and union members to demand justice.
