Cat behavior: Why cats lick plastic and when it becomes dangerous

Cats are often attracted to plastic bags, packaging, and films, engaging in sniffing, licking, or chewing. This behavior can stem from several factors, including curiosity, sensory stimulation from the rustling sound, or the texture of the material. Smells of food residue, such as fats or fish, can also attract them.

In some cases, the behavior may be linked to boredom or stress, as licking can serve as a calming mechanism. However, if a cat regularly bites or swallows plastic, it may indicate Pica syndrome—a condition where animals consume non-food items. This can be caused by nutritional deficiencies, psychological issues, or underlying medical conditions.

Ingesting plastic poses significant health risks, including mouth injuries, intestinal blockages, and internal damage. There are also risks of choking or strangulation. Owners are advised to keep plastic materials out of reach and consult a veterinarian if the behavior becomes frequent or involves ingestion.
