Syros Island cat sanctuary offers free food and lodging for volunteers
The animal refuge “Gatti di Syros” on Syros Island in the Cyclades, Greece, will open under NGO management in September 2026. It is recruiting volunteers to act as “cat caretakers” for five hours a day, six days a week, for a minimum of one month. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, speak decent English and be able to cover travel costs, international insurance, meals outside the refuge, excursions and extra transport.
Volunteers receive free accommodation in a shared house, with water, electricity and Wi‑Fi provided at no charge, and a day off each week. Their duties include feeding the cats, changing water, cleaning litter and the refuge’s areas, and, under veterinary supervision, administering medication when needed. Applications are currently open.
The program targets cat‑loving individuals seeking a unique volunteer experience while supporting the care of abandoned cats on the island.
