Cat food sales overtake dog food in Canary Islands

Retail chain HiperDino reports that cat food now accounts for 56% of sales in its pet section, while dog food represents 40%. The shift reflects a rise in the number of cats in households and changing consumer habits.

Wet cat food saw the strongest growth, up 18% over the past year, helped by an expanded product range and promotions. Sales of pet accessories also jumped 53%, and the overall number of pet‑food references increased by 12%.

HiperDino’s pet‑section manager Javier García says the company is adding more high‑protein, natural‑ingredient products such as Dibaq Moments, which contain up to 95% protein, to meet owners’ demand for better nutrition. Leading brands include Ultima, Brekkies and Friskies for cats, and Friskies, Cesar, Frolic and Ultima for dogs.
