Catalan communities rally against proposed waste-to-energy plants

Residents of Selva del Camp held an information meeting on 9 June 2024 to oppose a planned pyrolysis plant by Valogreene. Organisers warned of potential health impacts, lack of transparency and alleged procedural irregularities, noting the project had only been publicly disclosed weeks before the meeting. Ecologists highlighted that pyrolysis is an emerging technology that still raises environmental and economic concerns and argued the plant would function more like an incinerator, processing plastic waste derived from fossil fuels. They also pointed to previous setbacks for the developer, including a cancelled project in Bergara, and questioned the adequacy of the municipal environmental licence.

Separately, on 19 June 2024 the platforms Pobles Vius and the Assembly of Farmers organised a night march in the Sentiu area of Lleida to protest a macro‑biogas plant planned for the medieval town of Rocaverd. The demonstration began at the Sentiu town hall and included a 2.7‑km walk, musical performances, poetry and a stargazing session, aiming to draw attention to the perceived risks of the new facility and to demand broader community consultation.
