Catalan families seek screen time limits as school year begins

A report by technology brand SPC regarding the first mobile phones in Spanish families highlights how families in Catalonia are managing digital device usage as the school year begins. According to the study, 55.3% of Catalan families support establishing daily time limits, while 46.1% favor prohibiting mobile use during meals, and 43.3% suggest restricting use during school and study hours.

Digital wellbeing expert Laura Cuesta Cano, in collaboration with SPC, has proposed six recommendations for establishing family agreements on technology. These include creating shared commitments where adults also follow screen-free rules, establishing clear routines that balance screens with schoolwork and leisure, and setting usage limits based on a child's age and maturity. Additionally, the expert suggests designating specific screen-free spaces, such as the dining table or bedrooms.
