Catalan independence movement faces internal divisions over migration and mobilization

The recent migration crisis in Ceuta has highlighted deep divisions within the Catalan independence movement regarding immigration and border management. While parties such as Junts, ERC, CUP, and Aliança Catalana all criticize the Spanish state's management, their proposed solutions vary significantly. Junts is advocating for the Generalitat to assume full control over immigration and border competencies, arguing that the state has proven incapable of managing these flows.

Other factions within the movement present different perspectives, ranging from denunciations of European Union border policies to more restrictive stances. This debate follows a mass arrival of migrants in Ceuta on July 30, which required significant police and military deployment.

Beyond migration, leaders of the independence movement are also grappling with internal fragmentation and a decline in social mobilization compared to the 'procés' era. Figures within the movement have acknowledged a period of retreat and difficulty in engaging younger generations, noting a lack of the cohesive momentum that characterized previous years.
