Catalan language officially recognized in Zurich school program
The Catalan language has been officially recognized in Zurich, Switzerland, through the cantonal program ‘Heimatliche Sprache und Kultur’ (Language and Culture of Origin). This initiative aims to facilitate immigrant integration by valuing non-official languages within the school curriculum.
Following extracurricular classes started in 2023 by the Escola Catalana de Zúric, Catalan is now one of over thirty recognized languages in the program. This official status means Catalan course grades will appear on public school reports, classes can be held in school classrooms, and the canton provides training for teachers of these languages.
