Catalan municipal groups advocate for local autonomy and funding

Local political and administrative groups in Catalonia are calling for greater autonomy and improved resources to better serve their communities. The coalition Tots x L’Empordà held a training session in Vilafant, where leaders emphasized the need to protect municipal management from the partisan dynamics seen in Barcelona and Madrid. Agustí Ayats, vice president of the coalition, argued that independent municipalism ensures local governments act as tools for citizens rather than pawns for larger political parties.

Simultaneously, the Association of Decentralized Municipal Entities of Catalonia (AEMDEC) is demanding an adequate regulatory framework and sufficient financing. President Juanjo Cortés stated that these entities are essential for territorial cohesion, preventing depopulation, and managing environmental tasks such as fire prevention. Cortés noted that despite their contributions, these entities often remain unrecognized within the institutional system and require equal conditions to provide services alongside other local administrations.
