Catalan municipalities implement pedestrian safety measures
In the context of European Mobility Week, local communities in Catalonia are implementing and advocating for improved pedestrian safety and traffic reduction.
In Sabadell, residents and families from the Covadonga neighborhood held a march to demand more pedestrian space and safer environments for children. The protest follows the City Council's refusal to allow a street closure for Park(ing) Day, an international initiative where parking spaces are temporarily converted into public spaces for social activities. Organizers are calling for the immediate pacification of streets such as Covadonga and Jacint Verdaguer, requesting more green spaces and priority for sustainable mobility over private vehicles.
Meanwhile, in Seròs, the City Council has completed infrastructure improvements to secure the route to the Miquel Baró Daban Public School. Following requests from the school's parents' association, the municipality created a designated green pedestrian path protected by removable bollards. Additional measures include new pedestrian crossings, horizontal road markings to alert drivers of school zones, and speed bumps on Sant Àngel street to ensure a safer environment for students.
