Catalan municipalities restructure waste and cleaning services

Municipalities in Catalonia are implementing changes to their waste management and street cleaning services. In Igualada, the municipal group Igualada Som-hi has launched the ‘Unitat de Neteja Barris a Fons’. This initiative involves three coordinated teams—specializing in sweeping, high-pressure water cleaning, and weed removal—to perform deep cleaning in all city neighborhoods on a monthly basis, moving beyond the previous focus on the city center.

In Cambrils, the City Council has decided not to renew its agreement with Secomsa, a public company that has provided cleaning and waste collection services since 2005. The administration is preparing a new public tender to manage these services, following a study on selective collection models. Due to the scale of the contract and the requirement to follow European harmonization standards, the bidding process is expected to be complex and may not result in a new award until 2028.
