Catalan Parliament independence declaration anniversary

Nine years after the Catalan Parliament approved a resolution to proclaim the Catalan Republic, the event remains a significant point of political reflection. The resolution, presented by the Junts pel Sí platform, was passed with 70 votes in favor, 10 against, and 2 blank votes, while 53 deputies left the chamber in protest.

The vote was supported by Junts pel Sí, CUP, and independent deputy Germà Gordó. Opposing parties included Catalunya Sí que es Pot, which enforced strict voting discipline resulting in 10 negative votes. Members of the Ciutadans, PSC, and PP parties exited the chamber prior to the vote.

Following the declaration, the Spanish Senate authorized the application of Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution. This allowed the central government, under then-Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, to dissolve the Catalan Parliament, dismiss the regional government, and call for regional elections in December 2017.
