Catalan political debate intensifies over language and amnesty
Political tensions in Catalonia have resurfaced following statements by Badalona Mayor Xavier García Albiol and comments from Junts deputy Lluís Puig.
Albiol has reignited the debate regarding linguistic policy by asserting that Spanish language rights are guaranteed in Catalonia. He stated his intention to work toward preventing the perceived decline of the Catalan language. His position has drawn mixed reactions, with critics arguing that his claims overlook existing difficulties in public administration, institutional communication, and social life.
Separately, Lluís Puig, the former Minister of Culture who was recently granted amnesty, addressed his nine-year exile following the 2017 independence referendum. Puig stated he would repeat his previous actions, though he admitted he may have been naive in expecting the Spanish state to seek dialogue sooner. Puig also expressed disappointment that Generalitat President Salvador Illa was not present during his return to the Catalan Parliament.
