Catalan Summer University addresses linguistic challenges in AI and healthcare
The 58th Catalan Summer University, held in Prades, focused on the linguistic challenges facing the Catalan language in the digital, legal, and healthcare sectors.
AI expert Karina Gibert highlighted the role of artificial intelligence in internationalizing the language. She noted that the visibility of a language depends on its integration into digital tools like search engines, voice assistants, and translation platforms. Gibert emphasized that high-quality data and diverse linguistic corpora are essential to prevent users from being pushed toward dominant languages.
Plataforma per la Llengua participated in the event to address legal and social infrastructure needs. Director Rut Carandell noted a gap between formal linguistic rights and their practical application. Additionally, President Òscar Escuder raised concerns regarding the use of Catalan in the healthcare sector, warning that a lack of linguistic attention could impact patient safety. The event also featured discussions on linguistic recovery strategies and the digital presence of Catalan in Alghero.
