Catalan towns host traditional folklore festivals and giant gatherings
Several Catalan towns are hosting major cultural festivals and traditional gatherings centered on local folklore and 'gegants' (giants).
Vilafranca del Penedès is celebrating its annual festival, marked by the centenary of the first outing of the Àliga de Vilafranca. The festivities include a traditional 'Tronada' to signal the start of the celebrations and a commemorative program highlighting local history and architecture.
In Blanes, the 27th Trobada Gegantera will bring together nine groups from across Catalonia. The event features parades, musical performances by 'grallers', and ceremonies to honor members of the local giant-carrying groups.
Pineda de Mar is marking the 40th anniversary of its Trobada de Gegants. This special edition will feature 18 groups and over 40 figures. A highlight of the event is the unveiling of the restored Pineda giants, which feature new handmade medieval-style costumes and improved internal structures for better stability.
