Catalina Ribas Núñez identifies GRK2 protein link to hair loss

Microbiologist Catalina Ribas Núñez, a professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid affiliated with the Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa, has published a study in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology regarding the mechanisms of hair loss.

The research identifies a protein called GRK2, noting that its absence is linked to hair loss. While the study originated from investigating the protein's connection to head and neck tumors and inflammatory processes, the findings offer potential long-term insights into treating baldness. Ribas Núñez emphasizes that the research focuses on molecular-scale cellular communication, noting that cells become diseased when they stop communicating effectively with their neighbors.
