Catalonia activates INUNCAT emergency plan amid torrential rains
Catalonia is facing a severe weather emergency as torrential rains, thunderstorms, and high winds trigger the activation of the INUNCAT flood emergency plan. Authorities have issued ES-Alert mobile notifications to several regions, including Baix Camp, Baix Ebre, Ribera d'Ebre, and Terra Alta, warning of intense rainfall and potential wind gusts exceeding 90 km/h.
Extreme precipitation has been recorded across the region, with some areas seeing over 300 liters of rain within a five-day period. Granollers reported the highest accumulation at 361 liters. In Xerta, flooding reportedly affected approximately 85% of the urban center. The emergency services have responded to thousands of calls, with the 112 line receiving 1,931 calls related to over 1,500 incidents in a recent window.
In addition to flooding, Aemet has placed parts of Catalonia under orange alerts for wind and maritime storms, with waves reaching up to four meters in some coastal areas. While some forecasts suggest a slight improvement in certain sectors like Baix Llobregat, emergency protocols remain active due to the ongoing risk of flash floods and intense localized storms.
