Catalonia addresses social housing targets and urban heat issues

In Catalonia, regional housing and urban environmental policies are facing scrutiny. A central pillar of President Salvador Illa’s administration is the goal to provide 50,000 social housing units. Initial efforts to collect land for this purpose have yielded space for 14,762 units, approximately 30% of the target. Municipalities like Sabadell are pursuing independent promotion, offering land for 347 units, while other cities like Terrassa face significant housing deficits.

Simultaneously, urban planning concerns are rising in Terrassa regarding the urban heat island effect. Data from BiTer indicates significant temperature disparities between natural and urbanized areas. In the Sant Roc portal area, air temperatures reached 40°C and ground temperatures hit 59°C, compared to much lower readings in more rural areas like Can Petit. Proponents suggest that creating an urban forest in the Sant Roc area could benefit at least 1,000 people daily by mitigating these heat effects.
