Catalonia campsites: Only 43 of 351 have approved safety plans

Only 43 of the 351 campsites in Catalonia currently possess approved self-protection plans for flood or wildfire risks. According to Protecció Civil, this represents approximately one in eight establishments. Of the approved plans, 18 address flood risks—some also covering wildfires—while 25 are specifically for wildfire protection.

The issue gained renewed attention following torrential rains in the Tarragonès and Baix Penedès regions, which forced the evacuation of approximately 300 people from a campsite in Roda de Berà. The regional government previously estimated that roughly 150 campsites are located in flood-prone areas and has established a working group to assess these sites on a case-by-case basis.

Despite the low current numbers, officials have noted an increase in the pace of plan submissions and approvals. Data shows that 29 of the 43 approved plans have been authorized since January 1, 2025, suggesting an acceleration in compliance following recent extreme weather events.
