Catalonia education sector faces rising enrollment and staffing challenges
The 2026/2027 academic year in Catalonia has seen a significant rise in vocational training (FP) enrollment. According to the Department of Education and Vocational Training, 7,075 students have enrolled in various cycles, including 4,124 in intermediate degrees and 2,635 in higher degrees. This represents an increase of 637 students compared to the previous year.
Despite this growth, there is a shortage of available places, with approximately 500 students unable to secure spots in their chosen programs. In the Osona region, the Institut de Vic reported starting the term with 1,580 new students, though hundreds more were left without placements.
Simultaneously, the education sector is facing administrative challenges regarding educational support staff (PAE). The CGT union has reported chaos in the assignment of positions for special education workers and social integrators. Some workers have reportedly been notified of their immediate dismissal from vacant positions after the school year had already begun, following the appointment of permanent staff. While the Department of Education maintains that actions have been taken in accordance with the law, staff members have expressed concerns regarding the timing of these decisions and the impact on educational continuity.
