Catalonia harvest campaign triggers 36 fires

The cereal harvest campaign in Catalonia has resulted in 36 fires directly linked to harvesting activities as of August 15. These incidents have burned a provisional total of 908.36 hectares.

Harvesting machinery was responsible for 25 of the 36 fires, accounting for 69.4% of the total. Specific causes included engine or exhaust system issues—such as high temperatures from catalytic converters and filters—as well as mechanical failures like cutting saw malfunctions, header friction, and bearing breakages.

The largest single incident occurred in Guimerà (Urgell) on July 8, where a baler caused a fire that destroyed 413.67 hectares. Other significant fires occurred in Talavera (102.50 ha) and Castellfollit del Boix (87.30 ha). While a few large-scale fires accounted for 77% of the total area burned, the majority of the incidents were smaller, with 88.9% affecting less than 50 hectares.

To mitigate these risks, Rural Agents and the Special Forest Fire Prevention Group (GEPIF) have deployed special surveillance and support operations in collaboration with Forest Defense Associations (ADF), particularly in high-risk areas like Lleida and Central Catalonia.
