Catalonia hit by unpredictable, tropical-like storms
Catalonia has experienced a series of severe and unpredictable storms that have caused significant flooding and infrastructure damage. Following a devastating weekend where some coastal areas received over 250 liters of rain per square meter, a new massive storm system emerged in the Mediterranean on Monday, triggering red alerts, ES-Alert messages, and road closures.
Meteorologists from the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya and the Agencia Estatal de Meteorología state that these events are becoming increasingly difficult to predict using classical models. Experts Marc Prohom and Ramón Pascual explain that these recent episodes involve high-power convective systems that exhibit characteristics similar to tropical cyclones rather than typical Mediterranean rainfall, a phenomenon attributed to the effects of climate change.
