Catalonia launches €4.4 million truck‑monitoring system on the AP‑7 highway

The Generalitat of Catalonia has inaugurated a pioneering network of eight control stations on the AP‑7 motorway and one on the C‑33, investing €4.4 million. The system uses high‑speed weighing platforms, camera‑based licence‑plate readers and second‑generation tachograph sensors to assess vehicle weight, speed, insurance status and compliance with regulations, even at speeds up to 200 km/h. When a breach is detected, the information is sent instantly to Mossos d'Esquadra patrols and displayed on variable‑message signs, showing the offending vehicle’s licence plate and prompting the driver to stop.

The project, presented on the former toll plazas along the route, aims to improve safety for the more than 20,000 trucks that travel the AP‑7 daily, and to enforce traffic rules for both domestic and international freight traffic.
