Catalonia: Mobile phone use among children remains high despite school bans
Despite growing social movements like ‘Adolescencia libre de móviles’ aiming to delay smartphone access, many families are still yielding to social pressure as children enter secondary school. While regulations have successfully banned mobile phones within classrooms and throughout compulsory education, social habits outside of school have not changed at the same pace.
A UNICEF study titled ‘Infància, adolescència i benestar digital (2026)’ reveals that the average age for a child to receive their first mobile phone in Catalonia is 11.02 years. The data shows that 40% of Catalan children in 5th and 6th grade already own a phone, and 93.2% of adolescents are registered on social media platforms.
