Catalonia mushroom season delayed by heat and drought

The wild mushroom season in Catalonia is experiencing a delayed and diminished start due to high summer temperatures and significant drought conditions. Researchers from the Centre de Ciència i Tecnologia Forestal de Catalunya (CTFC) report that the forest ecosystem has suffered from water stress, which has directly impacted fungal production.

In regions such as Alt Urgell, Cerdanya, and Ripollès, production is described as negligible or non-existent in some areas. While some species have been found in the Val d’Aran and specific parts of Cadí, the overall yield is considered ‘insignificant’ compared to historical averages. This scarcity has led to a surge in prices, with certain varieties being sold to restaurants for between 45 and 50 euros per kilogram.

Experts suggest that the season may be shortened by approximately one month this year. There are concerns regarding long-term trends, with studies indicating that Pyrenean forests could see a 20% reduction in mushroom production by 2100 due to climate change. Local collectors and researchers remain cautiously optimistic that upcoming rainfall and lower temperatures could improve the campaign.
